Which languages do I need for my documents?

Last reviewed 5 October 2026. Source: Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, consolidated text of 1 July 2026.

In simple words

There is no fixed list of languages. The language depends on who reads the document. The declaration of conformity must be translated into the languages that each EU country requires for the countries where you sell the product (Article 16(2)).

Words in this article

EU declaration of conformity (DoC)
A signed document in which the manufacturer states that the product follows the rules.
Technical documentation
The set of documents that show the product follows the rules. It includes the product description, the materials, the production process, test reports and the label.
Member State
A country that is part of the European Union. There are 27.
Competent national authority
A government body in an EU country that checks if products follow the rules. It is also called a market surveillance authority.
Notified body
An independent organisation that an EU country has approved to check products or quality systems. Some modules need one.

Language per document

  • Declaration of conformity: the language or languages that each EU country requires (Article 16(2)).
  • Label and leaflet: a language that end-users easily understand, as each EU country decides (Article 6(7)).
  • Name and address of the manufacturer on the packaging: a language that end-users and authorities easily understand (Article 6(6)).
  • Documents for an authority: a language that the authority easily understands (Article 6(9)).
  • Records and letters about the conformity assessment: the official language of the notified body's country, or a language the body accepts (Article 15(2)).

What does RecyFert deliver?

The Gilbert FPR software can make the declaration of conformity and the technical documentation in different languages. RecyFert can deliver documents for all 27 EU countries.

Check each country

Each EU country decides its own language rules. Before you start to sell in a new country, check with the authority there.
